The Lakshminath Bezbaroa Library, the Central Library of Dibrugarh University is the pivotal information and knowledge hub that offers wide-ranging user services including access to books, journals, theses and dissertations, reports and surveys encompassing varied subjects and disciplines of human endeavour.

Brief History:

Though the Dibrugarh University was established in the year 1965, the university library came up only in the month of April of 1967 and initially started functioning with merely 997 books positioned in a room in the D.H.S.K. Commerce College, Dibrugarh. This small library was located along with the Department of Education formerly known as Institute of Education. The library was shifted from the D.H.S.K. Commerce College to the new permanent university campus at Rajabheta sometime in between the months of August-September of the same year and housed in an old tea factory along with some other departments and administrative blocks. At the beginning, the library had membership strength of only 5 teachers, 3 research scholars and less than 100 students from 4 science and 7 humanities and social sciences departments including Department of Law and Institute of Education. This small groups of users were served initially by the newly appointed Deputy Librarian, Mr. Ramesh Phukan and two L. D. Assistants. The Dibrugarh University library got a right start with proficient leadership of Mr. Ramesh Phukan, an M.A. with Diploma in Library Science from BHU, as he already had huge work experience as Senior Deputy Librarian of State Central Library at Shillong under the able guidance of famous Librarian Mr. Ram Goswami, renowned in his own stature as a library professional of Assam. The library was gradually intensifying its activities and services and by the end of the year 1982 the total library collection crossed 1,00,000 in volumes.

Objectives

• To collect, consolidate and circulate information and knowledge to students, research scholars and other academic communities.
• To support study and research by providing perpetual access to information resources
• To promote the use of various sources of information and knowledge among the users.
• To preserve, protect and reuse of the invaluable collection for and by later generations.
• To maintain universal and democratic ethos of Library.

The LNB Library intends:

A.  To provide an appropriate, organized and readily accessible quality collection of print and non-print resources and supportive equipment to meet the institutional, instructional and individual information needs of students, faculty and staff. The Library collection’s primary focus is the curriculum.

B. To support institutional research which relates to present or future curricular issues in higher education, and specifically community colleges.

C. To instruct users in critical information literacy for life-long learning

The Library collections:

The Library collections is made up of over 2,25,000 print and non-print resources and offering online access to more than 10, 000 e-journals and over 7000 e-books along with many other collections as the following:

Books
The total collection of books in the Library is over 1,94,340 books (on display at the Stack Section)  which includes Text Books and Reference Books. The collection includes books from the various branches of knowledge such as Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Humanities. The Text Books may be consulted within the Library or may get issued as per formalities laid down in the Library Act. These books are issued to the authorized Library Members for a certain period as per status of the Member. The Reference Books are for only consultation in the library premises and are not allowed for issue. If a Member fails to return book within the stipulated time, an overdue charges is levied against each book per day at the rate prefixed against each category of Member. 

Journals/Serials/Periodicals Collection
Journals or periodicals or serials are publications produced on a continuing basis following certain regularity of periodicity in its publications. For instance weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually, etc. There are some journals which are published irregularly also.
The LNB Library currently holds:

• 143 current periodicals (scholarly journals and popular magazines)
• 22,685 bound journals
• 21 regional and national newspapers
• 10,000+ e- journals

Government publications 
The LNB Library possesses some Government Publications which include the following:

• Census Data
• UN Journals
• Commonwealth reports
• NSS reports
• Govt. of Assam’s Statistical Reports

Gandhian Collection 

The LNB Library has a special Gandhian Collection of about 150 vols. which is at present housed at the Ground Floor.

Nobel Lauriat Collection

The LNB Library has a special Nobel Lauriat Collection of about 209 vols. which is at present housed at the Ground Floor.

North East Collection

The LNB Library has a special and rare collection of over 2000 books on North East India which is housed at the Ground Floor.

Children’s Book Collection (Proposed)

The LNB Library has proposed for a special collection for Children’s books to be housed at the Ground Floor.

Theses and Dissertation
 

The Library has more than 5000 Theses and Dissertations of various branches of knowledge such as Social Sciences & Humanities, Natural Sciences including Medical Science. Their bibliographical details are accessible through OPAC.

Reference Collection

The library provides a Reference Section with above 4300 reference books, current and retrospective. The Reference Books are for only consultation in the library premises and are not allowed for issue.  

 Newspaper Collection

The Library has a collection of approximately 100 newspaper bound volumes of important national and regional newspapers. Moreover, the library provides newspaper service with 21 current national and regional newspapers.

CD/DVD

The LNB Library has a  Collection of about 750 CD/DVDs of various disciplines which can be borrowed by any registered members of the Library.

Cartographs

The LNB Library has a  Collection of about 53 maps of various regions of the earth which can be referred by any registered members of the Library in the Reference Section of the library
