The Dibrugarh University Research Scholars’ Association (DURSA) and Gaurab Sanmilito Samaj (GSS) have organized “Gaurabor Din-07” on 22nd September, 2024 in the Rangghar Auditorium of Dibrugarh University on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Gaurab Gogoi, a promising student leader and former research scholar of Department of Life Sciences, Dibrugarh University. He was a general secretary of both Cotton College Students’ Union and Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students’ Union and was the president of DURSA, died in 2018 during continuing his Ph.D. in Dibrugarh University. Since then, his birthday has been celebrated as “Gaurabor Din”. At the beginning of the program, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Baruah, retired professor of Dept. of Life Sciences, Dibrugarh University and supervisor of Gaurab Gogoi, lit the lamp in the portrait of Gaurab Gogoi. This was followed by a chorus, performed by students of Dept. of Life Sciences of university. Dr. Pranjit Kalita, Secretary, Gaurab Sanmilito Samaj, in his welcome address spoke about various aspects of Gaurab Gogoi’s personality and recalled his devoted work till his death along with the aims and objectives of the formation of the GSS. Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University; Dr. Indra Kumar Bhattacharya, Former Principal of Cotton College (now University), Dipak Chetia, Dean, Research and Development, and Prof. Surajit Borkotokey, Dean, Student Affairs were present as guests in the event. Dr. Surjit Giri, eminent anaesthesia specialist and social activist on snake bite, delivered this year’s Gaurab Gogoi Memorial Lecture on the topic “Snake Bite: Its Treatment, Superstition, and Our Responsibility.”. In his speech Dr. Giri mentioned how to refrain from snakes, what to do or not after snake bite as well as the success of the Demow Model Hospital in the treatment of patients with snake bites. Two best post-graduate students of the Department of Life Sciences (both Zoology and Botany) of Dibrugarh University, Piyush Preetom Gogoi and Sujata Das were awarded the Gaurab Gogoi Memorial Academic Award, in the same program. The award was presented by Dr. Pankaj Chetia, Head, Department of Life Sciences, Dibrugarh University and Jagweswar Gogoi, father of Gaurab Gogoi. The whole program was anchored by Dr. Joydeep Borah and Dr. Chandanjyoti Chutia, members of the GSS. At the end of the program Jyotirmoyee Saikia, General Secretary, DURSA offered the vote of thanks. Among other guests, Dr. Binud Ch. Borah, Registrar, Majuli University of Culture, Professors as well as students of various departments of Dibrugarh University, the parents of Gaurab Gogoi, well-wishers were also present in the event. Dr. Lakhyajit Buragohain and Dimonjyoti Bora presidents of GSS and DURSA, respectively along with the other members were present in the meeting. A large number of contestants also took part in the Gaurab Gogoi Memorial All Assam Art Competition which was held in conjunction with the day.
