The XXII Convocation 2024 of Dibrugarh university was held on 10 March 2024. The Chancellor of Dibrugarh University and Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria declared the convocation open.
The Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Prof. Jiten Hazarika, delivered the welcome address. He thanked the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi for granting Dibrugarh University with the 100 crore Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (MERU) grant under the Prime Minister- Uchchater Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) Scheme. He also thanked the state government for granting an additional 100 crore for the academic and infrastructural development of the university, especially at the moment when the university was on course towards implementing the National Education Policy, 2020.
The Chief Guest of the convocation was Professor Sudhir Kumar Barai, Director, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. He in his address emphasized on holistic improvement of students, highlighting the interconnected nature of physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
The Chancellor of Dibrugarh University and Governor of Assam, Shri Kataria, in his address emphasised on inter-disciplinary education as mandated by NEP 2020 and expected that Dibrugarh University will devise curriculums that would enable such a process. He congratulated the university for receiving the monetary grants and emphasized that it needed to be utilised properly to ensure that the university became one of the foremost universities in India. He spoke about the relevance of Indian Knowledge System and how universities must take concerted measures to ensure that it was given top-most priority. He wanted the university to take steps to ensure that students from the underprivileged background, like the tea garden community, were provided free education. He also believed that the graduating students would become responsible citizens and work towards nation-building.
The total number of graduating students this year was 10,765, out of which there were 87 Ph. D degree holders, 37 Gold medal recipients including 33 post-graduates, 3 graduates from various disciplines, and one student conferred with Dr. Junali Kropi Memorial Award for securing the highest marks in the Department of Anthropology.
The D. Sc Honoris Causa was conferred upon Shri Kshiradhar Barua and the D. Litt Honoris Causa was conferred upon Nawab Imran Shah. The convocation was attended by around 1500 attendees, which included Vice-Chancellors from other state universities, the Deputy Commissioner, alumni, faculty members, administrative staff, members of the fourth estate, and graduating students.
