The Centre for Studies in Philosophy, Dibrugarh University with the sponsorship of Indian Council of Philosophical Research, New Delhi observed the Indian Philosopher’s Day on 23rd November, 2024. On this occasion, a Lecture on the topic The Concept of Truth: Epistemology, Metaphysics and Ethics was delivered by Dr. Sumitra Purkayastha, Professor, Department of Philosophy, Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Nagaon and Former Associate Professor, JB College, Jorhat.
The programme began with the University Anthem performed by the students of the Centre. The Welcome Speech was carried out by Dr. Chandan Kumar Sarma, Chairperson, Centre for Studies in Philosophy, Dibrugarh University where he highlighted the background of the celebration of Indian Philosopher’s Day and significance of the topic chosen for the programme.
In her Lecture, Prof. Purkayastha analysed the concept of Truth specially from the perspective of Classical Indian Philosophy, deliberated upon the interconnection between Truth (as epistemological concept), Reality (as metaphysical concept) and Value (as ethical concept). The Lecture was followed by an Interactive Session where questions and suggestions pertaining to the topic were raised and discussed.
As a part of the agenda, Jigyasa, a philosophical theme based hand written magazine prepared in context of the observation of Indian Philosopher’s Day by the Students’ Philosophical Forum, Centre for Studies in Philosophy was released by Prof. Dipak Chetia, Dean of Research and Development, Dibrugarh University.
On this very occasion, the prizes of the Dibrugarh University Inter College Essay Competition of Philosophy 2023-24 held on the topic Philosophy: Challenges and Relevance were also distributed. The first position of the Competition was secured by Alfarid Amir Borah, Sibsagar College (Autonomous), Joysagar while the second and the third position was secured by Bharati Gogoi, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), Lakhimpur and Jinti Das, Women’s College, Tinsukia.
The programme was graced by the presence of Deans of various Faculty of Studies, Teachers of different Departments and Centres for Studies of the University and affiliating Colleges, Research Scholars and Students of the University.
