Dibrugarh University recently organised a one day training workshop for secondary school science teachers under the ongoing ‘Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence’ (PURSE) project, one of the Flagship Infrastructure programs of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India on 4th of December, 2023 at Indira Miri Conference Hall. This one-day workshop is part of social responsibility activities of the university designed as prologue module to develop and disseminate teaching methods that help students imbibe the process of science that will strive to provide a platform for Secondary school teachers to meet their peers, form professional networks and exchange ideas & challenges in teaching and education.
In the Inaugural Session Prof Pankaj Das, Chairperson of the workshop delivered the welcome address and emphasised that the teachers are the backbone of the education system and empowering them with the right skills and tools can lead to a transformative change. A total of 98 participants from different schools of Dibrugarh district attended the workshop and introduced themselves to the gathering. The workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr Jahnabi Gogoi, Vice Chancellor, i/c, Dibrugarh University where she pointed out the importance of Science Education and research along with the ability to think scientifically and how these workshops are a medium to interact with teachers from remote areas. Ms Binti Sharma, Inspector of Schools, Dibrugarh, Prof. P. N Deka, HoD, Deptt. of Mathematics and Prof. Geetika Borah, HoD, Chemistry, DU graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. The session was compared by Dr Jitu Ranjan Chetia, Workshop Coordinator and delivered the vote of thanks.
Prof Surajit Borkotokey, Professor, Department of Mathematics and Dean of Student Affairs, Dibrugarh Universityacted as Resource Person on the topic “The fun of Mathematics Teaching”. The second session is conducted via online mode by Jayanta Kumar Sarma, an independent researcher and Senior Programme Associate, Aaranyak, Guwahati on “Inquiry based science learning for critical and creative thinking”.
The 3rd session on “National Curriculum Framework for school education 2023” was delivered byDr Chandan Kumar Sarma, Associate Professor and HoD, Department of History, Dibrugarh University. In the 4th session Dr Prabwaljyoti Phukan, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Dibrugarh University addressed on “Opportunities for Higher studies in Science-A brief overview”.
Feedback Session and Peer Group Sharing session was conducted by Dr Jitu Ranjan Chetia where participants shared their views and praised the university for conducting such an insightful and fruitful one-day workshop and they look forward to participate in various such informative and enlightening workshops in future. Certificate of participation to all the attendees’ were conferred by Prof Pankaj Das and Dr Kalyanjyoti Deori of Department of Chemistry and at last Vote of thanks was offered by the coordinator.
