A one week online workshop on Statistical Inference has been organized by the Department of Statistics, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Assam during August 24-28, 2020. The aim of the workshop was to familiarize the participants with some special areas of statistical inference with emphasis to methodology keeping in mind the ever growing importance of statistical Inference in all areas of data science and beyond. Organizers carefully selected five different topics for discussion to in this workshop.
Prof. Dipak Chetia, Dean R&D, Dibrugarh University was the chief guest in the inaugural session which was also graced by Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Head of the department of Statistics of Dibrugarh University along with some faculty members of the department. Prof. Hazarika welcomed the participants with a brief speech in which he described the various aspects of the subject and also about the organizing department. Prof. Chetia in his inaugural remark touched upon the importance of the subject and how it has become integral to any proper scientific research. Prof. Subrata Chakraborty, of the Department of Statistics, Dibrugarh University and coordinator of the above mentioned workshop detailed about the objectives and curriculum. He also elaborated on the topics chosen and their relevance.
Five important areas of theoretical and applied statistical inference namely, “Time to event data and its analysis”, “Non-parametric functional estimation with R”, “Sample size estimation in clinical trials”, “Regression models with stochastic regressors” and “Multiple hypotheses testing” were taken up respectively by the resource persons Dr. Manash Pratim Barman, Department of Statistics, Dibrugarh University, Prof. Santanu Dutta, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Tezpur University, Prof. Rahul Bhattacharya, Department of Statistics, University of Calcutta, Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Department of Statistics, Dibrugarh University and Prof. Gaurangadeb Chattopadhyay, Department of Statistics, University of Calcutta.
Mr. Aniket Biswas and Dr. Dhruba Das, Assistant professors, Department of Statistics, Dibrugarh University were the assistant coordinators who were involved in the planning to final execution of the event providing all necessary technical support for smooth conduction of the workshop. The workshop was only intended for participants with statistics background. From around 100 applicants, 60 from them were selected, upon screening. The participants were from various parts of the country. Even one participant from University of Palestine- Alzahra city Gaza joined the workshop.
