As an academic event organised under the SAP DRS I Programme of the Department of Commerce, Dibrugarh University, the one week online national level workshop on the theme “Use of SPSS and R-Statistics in Research” was inauguratedon the 6th of July (Monday) by the Honourable Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Prof. Ranjit Tamuli. Addressing to the participants, Prof. Tamuli has emphasized upon the advantages of the statistical softwarethat are available now-a-days for research. ‘There was a time it was exceedingly difficult as well as time consuming to process the collected data manually’, he added.
Before his inaugural speech, the Coordinator of the Workshop, Dr. Bipasha Chetiya Barua stated the objectives and purpose of the Workshop along with the modus operandi of the Technical Sessions. Dr. Chimun Kr. Nath, Head, Department of Commerce, DU welcomed the participants on his own behalf as well as on behalf of the Department of Commerce to this online learning platform. Prof. Ashit Saha, Dean Faculty of Commerce and Management Science as well as the coordinator of the SAP in his welcome note stressed upon the significance of such workshops and on the current trends in use of statistical packages in social science research.
In order to ensure one-to-one teaching-learning, the participation was limited to 50 applicants only. Participants from different states, different colleges/universities/other academic institutions and from varied educational backgrounds like Economics, Pharmacy, Engineering, Animal Biotechnology, Agricultural Sciences and others, apart from the core discipline of Commerce, attended the programme.
Three very able and experienced Resource Persons – Prof. Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee from Assam University, Silchar; Dr. Dhaval Maheta from Veer Narmad South Gujrat University, Surat and Dr. Hitesh Parmar from SP University, Gujrat have conducted the sessions on SPSS and R-Statistics respectively. Each day, there were sessions on SPSS and R-Statistics, wherein how to run these statistical software for various parametric and non-parametric statistical tests were covered by the three Resource Persons.
The Programme came to an end with the Valedictory Session organised on the 11th of July 2020. All three Resource Persons graced the session with their very encouraging and appreciating closing remarks. Seven of the participant representatives, each from different academic disciplines and locations, also shared their experiences throughout the course of the workshop and expressed their satisfaction and also the desire to attend more such programmes organised by the Department in the future. Each member of the organising team also added their final remarks and comments before the formal vote of thanks was offered by the Head, Department of Commerce, Dibrugarh University.
